The Importance of Electrical Testing at Work

30th November 2017

We’re all aware of the dangers that can come from faulty electrical installations in the work place, but few of us realise how important a thorough electrical test and inspection is.

What should be tested?

The simple answer, everything! Every piece of electrical equipment in your workplace should be regularly checked to ensure there are no early signs of damage, however a thorough test should be carried out between every 3 to 5 years dependant on the building usage. Damage can be caused by a number of factors, such as wear and tear, excessive electrical loading, and ageing of equipment, so it’s imperative you keep an eye out.

What could happen if I don’t get my premises checked?

First of all, you could miss a potential safety hazard which could end in disaster, not just for you, but for your employees. Electricity is one of the biggest causes of fires in the work place, and every year, 1000 electrical accidents are reported. Secondly, you could be in breach of safety regulations, so it’s important to stay up to date with those too!

What other benefits are there?

As well as preventing any hazards, you could also save your business money in the long run by spotting early signs. In some cases, an electrician could fix the equipment before it becomes a problem, saving you both hassle and £££’s.
